Step 2 Worksheet: Creating Your Web Presence
The first step in creating your web presence is to go to Blogger.com and simply go through the '3 Easy Steps' necessary to create a blog. So let's do that.
Now...once you have arrived on the Blogger home page, click on the very big orange arrow in the lower right hand side of the page that says 'Create Your Blog Now' (very clever).
Once you do that you will be taken to the next page which requires you to fill out the 5 fields to get your blog started. These steps are:
1) User name: This can be any name (unless it's taken). It is not your display name (the name on your blog) as that is a bit further down.
2) Create a password for your account (which must be at least 6 characters).
3) Repeat your password (just to make sure you remember it. Of course you might consider writing it down somewhere as well).
4) Display name: This is the name that will appear on your blog when you create entries.
5) E-mail address: You really should have a valid e-mail address for this. This comes in especially handy if you didn't write your password down.
After you have filled in these required fields, you then accept the 'Terms Of Service' (which you can also read these if you want as they are actually quite interesting) and click the next large orange arrow which says 'Continue'.
On the next page you will have 3 fields to fill out.
1) The Blog title: You can name this what you want to start, and then change it once your blog is set up. For example, we used YawpDemo in the demo blog that we’ve created to illustrate some of the points of the blog construction process.
2) You then give it a web address (or URL). You can simply call it your "title" at .blogspot.com (i.e. http://YawpDemo.blogspot.com) or enter a different name. However, you need a name that no one else has already taken, otherwise Blogger will tell you the name (URL) you have chosen is not available.
3) Word verification: This little word thing is to ensure that someone is not 'mechanically' manipulating this system. It wants a real person to be creating a blog, not some software program. So just enter in the letters and press -yep you got it- the big orange arrow that says 'continue'.
And don't be nervous about entering the letters wrong. If you do, it will just ask you to re-enter a new set of letters.
Once you get past the 'word verification' you are on your way to creating your web presence as the next page takes you to the template page where you get to choose what your blog will look like.
Chose a template by clicking on the little dot found in the lower left hand corner of any of the templates.
Again, have fun making a choice and remember, you can always change the look and feel of the blog at any time without losing any information (unless you have customized the code. However if you were able to do that...you most likely would not be reading this. So that's a moot point).
Once you have made a choice, click on the big orange arrow on the lower right hand of the page that says 'Continue'.
Blogger will then inform you that it is creating your blog. When it is complete with this process it will let you know that "your blog has been created!".
Now, you just click on the big orange arrow on the lower right hand side of the page and 'Start Posting'.
At this point you are very close to having a website. There are just a few more details to attend to.
When you click on the 'Start Posting' arrow, you will then be directed to a page that has a small box with 'Title' next to it and a large blank area directly beneath it. At this point you can creating your first blog entry by just typing in information into these boxes.
For example in the Title area we are going to type: MyYawp Demo Page.
In the larger area below we'll type: This is the first entry being made to the MyYawp demo page to demonstrate just how easy it is to set up a web presence on Blogger.com. This blog has been created while writing the instructions in the 'Web Presence Worksheet' found in Step 2 at MyYawp.com.
After your text has been entered, you simply click on the large orange box at the bottom of the page that says 'Publish Post'.
Once you do this Blogger will tell you "Your Post Is Being Published". Once complete, it will inform you that "Your Blog Published Successfully".
Now at this point you may either view the blog in the same window you are in, or open it up in a new window. There is an option for each to choose from.
Either way, the most important thing is you now have a web presence. Just click on either one of the options and take a look at it.
Here is the one created while writing these instructions:
http://yawpdemo.blogspot.com/
Now, there are a number of things that can also be done to this blog such as setting up a profile, links, changing the archive settings etc, all of which will all be explained in the 'Advanced Web Presence Worksheet'.
However, at the moment, the most important thing is you now have your own place on the web to start Yawping about your passion.
And now that you have a presence on the Internet, it's time to move on to the second most important thing, and that is to generate revenues from your passion.
So let's move on to Step 3 to set up your first 'revenue generating' account. .
